Friends,

On January 7, we evacuated our home due to the Palisades fire, which was threatening our neighborhood. In the urgency of the moment, I was able to salvage only a few items from the house. Later that night, our home  was destroyed by fire, and everything in it reduced to ash and rubble.  That is where many of our most cherished memories, among them our old photo albums, now lie.  The photos in those pages documented our milestones, friendships and family members — the moments that shaped our lives.

A few days later, my best friend and roommate in college visited Shari and me at our hotel.  In his hand was an envelope containing some old holiday cards we sent him, and a stack of loose photos of us from our college days. Later that same day, my sister Caryn emailed me a picture of our wedding invitation and a few snapshots from our childhood.  In that moment, a lightbulb—or rather, a flashbulb— went off in my mind.  Our lost photos very likely were somewhere— either taken on someone else’s camera or if by me, someone else was also taking photos of the same shared moment, albeit from a different angle.

What if there was a way to collect all those photos that our friends and family might have of us?  And what if everyone who has been asking us what they can do to help us had something tangible and invaluable to do?

I set up a Shared Photo Album in my iPhotos and sent invitations to a few friends and family members, and within hours a new trove of photos was being built, as if resurrected from the ashes.

On this site, I’m sharing a simple, step-by-step guide to creating a photo-sharing folder and encouraging your loved ones to upload or mail photos featuring you. Whether you choose to store them digitally or recreate albums through a service like Shutterfly, this process offers a way for your photos to literally rise from the ashes.

I hope this site can help you restore a connection to the moments and people that bring joy and meaning to your life. As Jim Croce beautifully sang:

Photographs and memories

Christmas cards you sent to me

All that I have are these

To remember you

Warmly,

The Midler Family

Larry, Shari, Todd, and Alex
